Twenty years ago I wrote a letter I thought I had mailed, but only recently discovered it had been with me all along. It describes a space and works that strangely resemble mine today.
So here I am, checking in before moving on.
The exhibition will continue to change while it's open. Part I focuses on light and writing; Part II on motion.

Arrangement is a space where I gather the things I like โ this desk and the window in front of it are its main territory. Especially things that calm me, and things that have stayed with me for a long time. They don't have to be the same object โ what matters is the kind. A ruler. A crystal component. A category that has lived with me, in different forms, for years.
This place is not fixed. I bring something in, attach it, and later take it down to make room for another. Some things stay briefly. Some stay long. Even while the exhibition is open, this arrangement will continue to shift โ from letters, to crystal objects, to mechanical parts. Or whatever I want to place here in that moment.
Arrangement is part of Check-In, and a check-in in itself. I come here to see what holds me steady now, and I rearrange.

Over the past thirty or so years, I've kept the handwritten letters and cards I received. Most were from friends in middle and high school, with some from the years that followed. About 98 of them were in one box.
While preparing for this exhibition, I opened the box again for the first time in a long while, and reread only a few of them. The notes below are thoughts that came to me on April 30, 2026, before the exhibition began.
I learned that someone I had thought of as just a classmate had sent me birthday cards every year throughout high school. Those cards show me a shape of a relationship I didn't carry forward.
In one letter, I now sense a certain undercurrent of violence in the writing โ something I couldn't see at the time, but that the writer would later reveal in his behavior. What was invisible then becomes legible only after time and experience.
There are also letters I exchanged with a man I never met. Two or three of them. I no longer remember how we began writing to each other. And yet, his writing carries a tenderness. I came to see that the character of someone I don't know can be sensed through fragments of writing โ even decades later.
One letter has stayed with me for a long time. It was from a woman at my high school whom I only knew by face. After seeing my graduation exhibition, she wrote me a letter and slipped it into my school mailbox (it was a boarding school, so each student had one). Typewritten on blue paper, she explained why my work had moved her. I never wrote back to thank her, and that has stayed with me. The fact that she watched a student's work with care, and put what she saw into words so respectfully and warmly โ it remains precious to me.
During the exhibition, I will read these letters again, one by one. I don't yet know what I'll make of them. But one thing is clear โ this work is not about looking back.
A letter belongs to its writer. With time, it belongs to the receiver. With more time, it belongs to no one in particular โ because neither the writer nor the receiver is still the person they were then. I am rereading these letters whose ownership has grown unclear.

Only recently did I realize that I had been keeping a letter I wrote to a friend in Chicago about twenty years ago. Based on the "ATTEMPTED โ NOT KNOWN" stamp on the envelope, it seems the letter made it to Chicago before being sent back to me for some reasonโyet I had no memory of it ever happening.
On March 26, 2026, I invited that friend to my studio and asked her to break the seal and read the letter herself. After she finished, she said: "It doesn't seem like a coincidence that this letter came back to you at this point in your life. Andโyou really never change."
When I finally read the letter myself later on, the first thing I noticed was that the handwriting felt unfamiliar. The voice didn't sound like mine, either. It wasn't just the awkwardness of something written long ago; it felt like reading a letter written by a stranger.
And yet, this stranger described a space she desired for her future: a high place where city noise drifts up, a room enclosed in glass, a corner for her favorite glass cups, something descending from the ceiling, and things that catch the light.
I am not on a rooftop now; I am in a container on the ground. But three sides are made of glass, my favorite glass cups are gathered in one place, and a mobile made of light hangs from above. Around me, buildings stand taller than my container. I had been building this space before I even knew the letter existed. My friend recognized it and said, "You really never change."
There are parts of that I agree with and parts I don't, but those distinctions feel small. What I notice is the trace of having doneโeven if only little by littleโthe things I love.
What stayed with me more was what I had not written in the letter: Why, throughout my life, have I never seriously wanted ( )? This question of absence led to Outgoing, a parallel work in this exhibition.

99 Letters are the letters I've received over the past thirty or so years. Returned Mail is one I sent twenty years ago that came back. Outgoing are the letters I am writing now.
While the exhibition is open, I will write. Each piece of writing goes into a translucent envelope and is attached to the glass walls of the container. Some are visible from outside; some are not. I decide as I go. The form and content of the writing are also decided in the moment.
If a letter from twenty years ago has arrived to me now, the writings I make today will also arrive somewhere.

( ) is a word I made up. One day in 2025, it suddenly came to me while I was driving from home to to my studio โ this container.
At some point, drawing stopped coming easily to me. When that happened, I would tell myself, โYou are not Picasso. Just move your hand.โ Oddly enough, that thought calmed me down.
( ) is the spell that holds that feeling.
I'm not sure why the word took the shape of a woman's name.
( ) also reminds me of a phrase I came across back in college: "Feet in the mud, head in the stars." I no longer remember who said it, or what the book was called โ but the line has stayed with me like an incantation. I can't explain why, but ( ) feels very much like that phrase to me.
So, when you open the mailbox, you'll find [ ].

Nok Pharmacy is a fictional pharmaceutical company founded in May 2026 within Nok Studio in Seoul. It continues my ongoing exploration of fictional service systems presented as if they were real institutions.
The project began in February 2026 with Lovecare, a virtual insurance company introduced during Forms of Love, a group exhibition at Nok Studio. Lovecare operated through the structure and language of an insurance company โ offering symbolic compensation and imagined policies for human relationships. Nok Pharmacy shifts toward a different system: pharmaceuticals, wellness culture, and the visual language of temporary emotional relief.
In both projects, I do not merely produce objects resembling products or advertisements, but temporarily adopts the persona of the institution itself. During Lovecare, I approached visitors as though acting on behalf of an insurance company. Within Nok Pharmacy, I perform the roles of pharmacist, pharmaceutical representative, and emotional consultant โ explaining fictional products with the tone and structure of genuine consumer care.
The works imitate familiar systems that promise protection, treatment, reassurance, or recovery. At the same time, they expose how easily emotional vulnerability can be packaged, marketed, and consumed when delivered through the visual authority of institutional language.
Rather than functioning as satire alone, these projects examine the uneasy space where sincerity, performance, comfort, commerce, and emotional dependency begin to overlap.
* Lovecare was originally presented in February 2026 under the company name "Nok Genenral Insurance" The institution was renamed "Nok Insurance" as the project developed.

The Last Gift Dilemma
๋ง์ง๋ง ์ ๋ฌผ ๋๋ ๋ง
On Christmas Eve, Santa makes a mistake, leaving only one gift for two remaining children on the list.
Child A has been naughty all year.
One day, they punctured the tire of a parked car as a prank. The car turned out to belong to a human trafficker, and this incident led to the criminalโs arrest and the rescue of 30 victims.
Child B has been exemplary all year.
They were responsible for checking on their bedridden grandmother once a week, but on one occasion, they lied to go play with friends. During that time, the grandmother fell while trying to get water and suffered a fatal injuryโan accident that likely would have been prevented if the child had been there.
Only one child can receive a gift.
Vote now: Which child should receive itโand why?
